Halloween Tradition

Halloween originated at the ancient Celtic festival in Samhain with people starting bonfires to ward of ghosts. It was originally All Hallows Eve and was celebrated on all saints day on November 1st. The people would carve jack o lanterns out of squash and gourds to keep ghosts and demons away. . Halloween was moved to the 31st because that was the day ghosts of the dead were believed to return to earth. People began leaving stuff like food out to unwelcome visitors in costumes. Trick or treating and Halloween became a holiday for many countries in the 1840’s. Did you know that 25% of all U.S. Candy is purchased for Halloween?
