Last year’s on-campus basketball league was such a hit that we decided to bring it back bigger and better this year!
Yesterday, the gymnasium was converted to the SHS basketball draft headquarters as the entire student body packed the gym to witness the selection process! All eligible basketball players sat alongside this year’s cheerleaders at the lottery tables to eagerly await their name to be called. This year’s league will consist of six teams featuring some familiar faces as well as a few new ones. The Colonels will be coached by Charles Gassen; Wildcats coached by Alicia Vincent; Raptors coached by Brandon Cheak; Thoroughballers coached by Kyla Haney and Abby Smoot, Ducks coached by Jeremy West, and the Bulls coached by myself (Myles Young).
I for one can say the draft brought out the true competitive nature from coaches and players as each coach negotiated picks for their team. Once the selection was made, Commissioner Donald “Trey” Tyson read the selection to an excited crowd. The celebrations didn’t stop there! Each player was met up front by their coach to receive their player contract that featured their new team logo. There were even a few surprises as one round was met with a massive contract trade that featured the Ducks selection of Anna (reigning Champion for the Bulls) for the Bulls selection of Hershel! Also on hand reading draft picks were Sandy Bell, Dr. Kara Davies, and Dr. Stewart!
We’re so excited as this year’s season is set to begin in two weeks, and we invite all families and friends to come join us at Coach Sellwood Court to cheer on their favorite basketball players and cheerleaders!
