Last week, a group of enthusiastic students from Stewart Home & School embarked on a memorable journey to participate in an event hosted by Kentucky Summer Get Away at Camp Horsin’ Around in Perryville, KY. The Kentucky Get Away is through Special Touch Ministry Inc. This visit marked a significant moment for both the students and the ministry, as it focused on the importance of community, inclusion, and mutual support.
Established in 1982, Special Touch Ministry is a non-profit faith-based organization, interdenominational in scope, committed to serving people with intellectual or physical disabilities, their families and caregivers.
The Kentucky Get Away is coordinated by Stewart Home’s very own, Kusum Neal. Kusum has served as the coordinator since 2001, growing the Kentucky Get Away Camp year by year. This year, 19 students from Stewart Home & School joined Kusum at camp.
Each morning began with breakfast, followed by chapel, recreational activities till noon, lunch, more recreational fun, then concluded with evening services. Stewart Home & School student, Mike, said his favorite parts about camp was the activities and receiving new religious books. Tamara stated she had a wonderful time and hopes to return next year!
In essence, Special Touch Ministry stands as a beacon of hope and love, embodying the belief that every individual, regardless of their abilities, deserves to experience the fullness of life and faith in a supportive and inclusive environment. Thank you Kusum for having such a profound impact on not only our student’s lives, but each camper that is able to attend the Get Away.
