We just finished week 2 of our basketball season and lets just say that we couldn’t be happier! Our students and staff are excited to be back on the hardwood! Between our five basketball teams and cheerleaders, we have close to 100 participants in this year. As you may know, we returned to the Special Olympics Georgetown League where each of our teams have the opportunity to qualify for the state tournament. Each week our five teams compete on our campus, or in Georgetown against the best talent in central Kentucky.
In week one, the SHS Panthers traveled to Georgetown to play against the Grant County Fireballs. The Panthers made a strong second half run, but came up short in the final few minutes. Final score was 35-26. Meanwhile back in Frankfort, the four SHS teams kicked off the season with some in house rivalries. Up first, the Raptors took on the Cubs. Like the Panther’s game, this game was close all they way until the final few minutes. The Raptors started their season with a strong showing against the Cubs securing the W. In the last matchup of the night, the Ducks competed against the Wildcats in what turned into a nail biter. Big shots were hit by Jeremy’s Ducks that closed out the game in the 4th quarter that gave Michael Ghant’s Wildcats their first loss of the Season.
Week 1 Scores:
Cubs (Coach Kyla Haney) 26 | Raptors (Coach Brandon Cheak) 34 | Winner: Raptors
Ducks (Coach Jeremy West) 22 | Wildcats (Coach Michael Ghant) 16 | Winner: Ducks
1A Panthers (Coach Charles Gassen) 26 | Grant County Fireballs 35 | Winner: Fireballs
WEEK TWO RECAP:
With the amount of snow that the Frankfort area was predicted to get (and we did get – look at the bottom of the article for a picture), SOKY postponed the Raptors, Cubs, Ducks, and Wildcats Georgetown games until a later date. Luckily, we were able to still host a fun night of basketball setting up matches between the Raptors & Wildcats, and Cubs & Ducks. In what turned into the most talked about matchup of the week was the 1A Panthers put out a challenge to the AC MonSTARS. The team was made up of staff Myles Young, Rachel Ray, Simon Hazlett, Thomas Hazlett, Joe Taylor, and a few more local friends and family of the school!
The match started off with the MonSTARS taking a commanding lead, going into halftime 30-20. Charles and his Panthers made some adjustments in the third quarter having his team come back finishing the quarter 43-30. Just when the Panthers thought the game was out of reach, a late game push by the MonSTARS had the game tied 45-45 with 13 seconds left. Anna of the Panthers inbounded the ball to Alex and off his missed 3 point attempt, Anna was able to grab the rebound with seconds remaining and score allowing the Panthers to secure the victory. GREAT JOB!!!!
The second matchup of the night featured the Raptors and Wildcats. The Raptors came out and controlled the tempo of the entire game lead Justin. The Wildcats fought hard, but the Raptors offense was just too much this week for the stellar defense of Michael Ghant’s Wildcats. Final score 26-10.
Lastly, Jeremy’s Ducks took on Kyla’s Cubs. The Duck’s offensive play calling proved to be too much for the Cubs this week as Seth, Robert, and Austin lead scorers for the Ducks. The dynamic duo of Sarah and Liz for the Cubs gave a great effort, but ultimately wasn’t enough to defeat the Ducks. Ducks win, 18-6.
