Down Syndrome Dreams

Celebrating Down Syndrome

We are celebrating Down syndrome with Angela! People with Down syndrome have dreams. Angela’s was to become Mayor of Stewart Home & School. This picture is a shot of her realizing her dreams after more than 8 years of trying!

At Stewart Home & School, the students, including those who have a diagnosis of Down syndrome, are encouraged to be independent and be active creators in their day-to-day lives.  Students have the opportunity to attend classes, without an upper age limit; to take classes focused on vocational training in which the goal may be to work or volunteer either off or on-campus; to participate in recreational and extracurricular activities; and to be as independent and self-sufficient as possible.  Above all else, we strive to provide an environment where our students are embraced for being whoever they decide to be.

I was there to watch Angela attain this dream and it made me so happy to see her finally get her dream. I have seen her attain many different dreams over the years she has been at SH&S. As she has changed, so have her dreams. Her father & I are very proud of her. Wonder what the next goal/dream will be.
