Academic Classes
Academics class is aimed at providing continued help and practice in various subject areas. Most Mondays and Tuesdays are spent working several areas of reading and comprehension. Higher level classes can do their work independently, reading and answering comprehension questions on paper, while lower level classes read and answer questions aloud. Wednesdays and Thursdays are usually centered around math. Since this is an area that many struggle with, ample time is spent on this. Fridays students complete work that is unfinished or correct writing samples (for higher classes) to keep in a portfolio.
Word processing, email, research, and educational games are just a few of the areas that are covered in the Academic Computer lab. Students start at their current level of proficiency, and through projects centered on their interests or other classrooms’ activities, increase their skill level on the computer. Students can also keep up with current events, their favorite sports teams, and much more as they learn to safely navigate the World Wide Web.
In Grammar, our students do so much more than merely focus on the parts of speech and how sentences are constructed. They go beyond that level by formulating creative stories and working on reading and comprehension strategies. Students enjoy reading articles relating to their interests, and then using higher-level thinking to analyze the material. However, there is time for a little fun! Students enjoy writing silly stories, reading and comparing different fairy tales, and playing group games.
Physical & Emotional Wellness are covered in this class- fitness, nutrition, hygiene, and illness prevention as well as emotions and emotional responses, anger and stress management, communication skills (verbal and non-verbal) listening skills, conflict resolution, friendships, and empathy. Living Skills - weather appropriate clothing, Fashion, and clothing care. All units are taught in cooperative learning settings and include
teaching/learning styles and methods such as group discussion, team
assignments, role playing, art projects, puppetry, music, poetry, and
dance. Hands on methods are used as frequently as applicable and possible.
Journalism class covers a variety of topics related to the news media. Subjects including writing and photography are studied. Journalism classes also receive a daily subscription to Frankfort's local paper, so reading about current events and discussing them is a part of class. Besides focusing on different aspects of the media, we also strive to improve writing skills. Whether it is creative writing or describing events happening both on and off campus, pencils are constantly in use! Students are strongly encouraged to write about what interests them and will occasionally have their works featured in our school newsletter, the Panther Paws.
Math The Stewart Home School math program strives to encourage students to gain an understanding of the correlation between math and everyday living. The students will be given the opportunity to strengthen their problem solving and logical reasoning skills, as well as gain confidence in computation skills, and when appropriate, gain useful skills in using a calculator and computer for mathematical enhancement. The focus of this program is to equip students with confidence and practical information that will carry over to everyday situations.
Classes work on building various levels of reading comprehension skills for multiple style learners. Lessons include beginning sight words and word blends, simple phonics, basic grammar techniques for lower level readers, and maximizing and maintaining comprehension through incorporating high interest reading material and analysis processes for those in intermediate and advanced classes. Through the use of creativity and multiple reading resources, we work at generating motivation to increase reading fluency and reading comprehension. There are many hands on projects as well as independent activities.
Reading B Students do a wide variety of reading exercises from phonics to Shakespeare. Daily goals vary from word recognition and comprehension skills, to oral reading and vocabulary. Students have access to the school library which allows them to choose their favorite books, or discover all the classics. Students in Reading B read a new book every fall, and start poetry in the winter. Units are fnished in the spring before Family Weekend, and concentration on summer reading programs begins.
In Science our students study a wide variety of curricula, some of which are: biology, human anatomy solar system, animals, life science, earth science, and much more. The students are encouraged to participate in class discussions and activities as well as written assignments. There are also a variety of animals in the science lab that our students enjoy watching, studying, and petting!
Social Studies Our Social Studies class covers many areas, including history, maps, economics, famous people, current events, and our government. It all has one thing in common: it’s learning for real life. In social studies we focus on things you should know to better help you enjoy movies, understand the news, plan your family vacation, and get more out of everyday life. We even take requests! If there’s something you’ve seen on tv or read about, and want to learn more, just ask. With reading, written class work, virtual tours, DVDs, field trips, and hands-on projects, there’s something for everyone.
